Samsung T7 Touch Portable SSD

When I reviewed Samsung's T5 portable flash drive , the inclusion of a USB Type-C (as well because the more common Type-A) interface seemed a touch premature. But still, it offered excellent speed and good capacity, although the speeds themselves paled compared to Samsung's NVMe SSDs that are found in high-end laptops and PCs. Now, though, it's a replacement model - the T7 Touch, which, because of an embedded PCI-E NVMe SSD, claims to supply transfer speeds of around 1,000MB/sec over USB, which are double that of the old T5.

As another touch, the drive now comes equipped with a fingerprint reader, which you'll use to secure files on the device, with them remaining hidden till you unlock it. just like the T5, the T7 also sports alittle Type-C interface, but again includes both Type-A and Type-C cables. The difference today, though, is that much more devices offer USB 3.2 Gen 2 support (the latest and fastest USB standard, formerly referred to as USB 3.1), either over the new Type-C reversible port or a more common Type-A port.

This means that offering an SSD which will provide even faster speeds is now worthwhile, because a typical USB 3 interface simply can't handle speeds much faster than the first T5 was capable of. That said, you'll still use the T7 with USB 2 or USB 3 ports. It remains backwards compatible, but you will see around 500MB/sec maximum from the latter and tons but that over the previous .

Capacities include 500GB, 1TB and 2TB, and with such monumental speeds on offer, there's clearly an entire range of use cases here. A permanently connected super-fast auxiliary storage device, portable drive for handling massive files or because of the fingerprint security, even as a secure flash drive.

The T7 may be a touch longer, but thinner than the T5, but you'd still barely notice it in your pocket. In face, it's and seems like alittle card holder. Both Type-A and Type-C cables are included also as software to configure the fingerprint security. this will have the added protection of password security too, or are often disabled, but the power to permit your finger to unlock the device is probably going to be the foremost popular option.

Setting this up is straightforward and therefore the software loads whenever you connect the device. However, on devices where the software isn't installed, you merely got to unlock it using your finger for the files to be accessible. you'll enter multiple fingerprints, a bit like you'd on a fingerprint-enabled smartphone.

Performance was right the cash too, with speeds approaching double that of the T5 with a read speed of 1,050MB/sec (enough to transfer a 25GB enter but 30 seconds) with a write speed of 954MB/sec. CrystalDiskMark's test also revealed much faster 4K write performance.

Ultimately, the T7 is one among the fastest external drives on the market and can wipe the ground with any hard disc arrangement. Of course, the latter will offer much more storage for your cash - the T7 costs $399/£369 for the 2TB model, $229/£249.99 for the 1TB model and $129/£129.99 for the 500GB version. If you do not need those crazy speeds or fingerprint reader, though, the still excellent T5 does cost much less for an equivalent capacities, except for security and fastest file transfer speeds, the T7 Touch is unbeatable.
